Bange Muda / Sya : Dho / Vaishya Dev : Toothache Relieving God
Walking through thamel
if u walk a bit further towards New Road via small galli of Naradevi u will see
this strange shrine site. It is called Sya Dho स्या:
धो in newari language which means toothache
curing God. It is also known as Vaishya Dev, God who is believed to heal
toothache. Supposedly there is a teeny tiny little idol inside of the main
hole of the tooth god’s shrine, although the coins nailed on every part of the
log obscure any view into the burl. In fact, the log is so covered that none of
the actual wood is visible anymore either. Even today people nail a coin
and only visit dentist. In fact the name of this place use to be Shyamaru श्यामरु
but because of this curved log this place today is known as Bange Muda which
literally means curved log. People around Kathmandu valley visit this shrine
and nail a silver coin and believe that heals their teeth.
There is no any fix
deity in the hole in the center part of log but people worship that hole and
nail a coin. Newar journalist Suresh Kiran claims that when construction of Kasthamandap
of Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square was completed the remaining log were placed here
and small replica of Kasthamandap was
constructed as a public gathering house at this place but no written evidence
were found to prove it. Another rumor goes that once this log use to be so long
that it covered almost Asan to Bhotahiti some also claim that the remaining of
that log were found while building new house. Similar kind of log is also placed
at Chikamunga चिकमुग: and people nail coin there too but
that log is not believed as teeth healer as this one. People worship this log
by keeping rice in clay pot along with some coins and betel nuts n top of coin
and later they nail the coin. This place today is the major dentist hub. Many dentists surround this site probably there must be some reason of toothache relieving shrine and dentist around.
