A Semester with Dr. Komal Phuyal

A teacher who cares like a mom, scolds like a dad, teases like a sister, irritates like a brother and loves more than a lover - Komal Phuyal, the shepherd in my writing class, made me write better. Standing here with a feeling of  "Yes, I write good these days" reminds me of all those impression of that crazy-like weird person who was supposed to take my very first class of academic writing at the Central Department of English, Tribhuvan University. It was the first class at Master’s degree program in English. Everyone was excited as they were all eager to get to meet new professors. I was wondering as I felt that there would be a gentle, handsome, well-behaved, well-dressed, well-spoken person in front of the students in class. And here comes the most cunning, fat, sesame-rice hairy man whose belt was almost at the verge of suicide, whose specs seemed as though they were stolen from the nineteenth century collection at a modern museum and whose clothes could not permit him to stand in as a university professor of our mind in front of us. And yet, that man shook the earth beneath us, to teach us how to cultivate dream, and explore the treasure hidden within us. Here I’m going to share my intimate feeling on how my teacher Komal Phuyal consumed his candle to enlighten our skills hidden within us, inspired us to be creative, and helped us identify the  vast ocean of ideas lying at slumber in our own head.
It was the sixth week of our first semester when I had my friend from R.R Campus at my place:  we were having a hot green tea in my study room. In the meantime, suddenly my friend's eyes were caught by a thick book in shelf. As he took the book he asked me, "Isn't this book from the first semester of MA? It seems like you haven't touched it yet. And that took me back to the class where many of my friends used to scold Phuyal sir for not going through book, and that also made me confess that "Yes, I haven't gone through this book called Ideas &Details much.” Smiling to myself, I felt so warm in heart because I had already got piles of ideas and details from him, being present in his class. I had heard somewhere, “The best teacher teaches from heart, not from the book." I learnt so much more from his lecture than from the books. As a Japanese proverb reads, "Studying one day with a great teacher is far better than thousand days of diligent study.” Each and every moment with him boosted our being: he took our hand, opened our mind, and touched the heart.
I still remember that rainy day when I (including with my friends) had visited his presentation on research that he had carried out for his PhD degree. Though it was cold outside, he was sweating a lot while presenting his paper. Surrounded by his professors, we could see how much a student feels in front of his/her professor; and yet, we were there as his friends as if we  were no more afraid of him. This shows how much intimate he was with us: in fact, he had actually crossed the barrier of traditional conditioning of teacher and student and become our friend to make us feel comfortable as better human. From that day on, a seed started sprouting in me which inspired me to do a serious research on very special topic as he dared to do. And here I am still writing and researching to make this world a better place as though the seed has begun to sprout in me. And that reminds me a quotation by Henry Adams, “A teacher affects eternity he can never tell where his influence stops." Up to this day, I am always inspired to enlighten myself and to light many candles I see in the future generation. So, this culture of enlightening world goes on and on.
When I passed Bachelor’s Degree, there was a huge ego in me and my friends. Later, when Phuyal sir started saying, "My rules are my rules" as if he is the ruler of this whole country, it really broke our ego. His rules, guidance, and teaching method made us realize what our existence really was. The way we studied before and the way we do now was completely different. His scolding voice and strict rules brought irritation in whole class at first but later on, his rules shaped us the way a potter shapes the clay and an artist crafts a stone and throws out all the unnecessary parts away to present it with a beautiful shape of God that he is sure will be worshiped later. As Robert John Meehan argues, "Teacher are not 'just teachers', but are the managers of the world's greatest resource: children!" I can't count how much we scolded him at first, and later on couldn't stop praising him. Through the entire semester, he used to say, “If you are made up of glass, you will break and if you are made up of metal, I’ll bring you in perfect shape.” Finally, he proved us as a metal and shaped us in such a way that we had never been like this before, not much strong about our writing.

While concluding this writing, I really do not want to explain what people said about him because for world, teacher may appear just a teacher but for a student a good teacher becomes a hero, who leads student from ignorance to enlightenment. Today when I see many of my writings published in national and international journals, I feel I have forgotten many things which he said in the class; yet, I haven't forgotten how he made us feel about writing. I do not want to see only Dr. Komal Phuyal in him, but a living experience that the legacy of many professors lineage of education following  him and this lineage of wisdom shall follow through all the scholars from that batch. His graceful being reminds me of Will Schuester's words that run thus:  "The best teachers don't give you the answers, they just point the way and let you make your own choices. Your own mistakes. That way you get all the glory and you deserve it."

An enlightening info vid on Radiation

Friends, we
are surrounded by radiations from every corner and in every breath we take we
are in this radioactive air, the side effect of this RADIATION is beyond the
imagination and we really don't know in which aspect of life are we going to
see the effects and know about it and be aware of it, and I am afraid may be we
will be very late at that moment to do something about it.

That was the
one key point when I felt strongly to do something about it, and started doing
a research, mainly my research was based on YouTube, Google, Activists, Friends
& Spiritual / Yoga Masters, and many things started coming in front which continuously
started to hunt in my mind & heart to do something so I came up with the
idea of making this video and share it to the world .

I choose the
Pashupatinath Temple to make this video so that we not only convey this
important message but also show a beautiful site of OUR MESMERIZING COUNTRY
NEPAL, After devastating earthquake there is rumor about our country that
nothing is left to see in Nepal any more so it was also one way to show our
NEPALI SPIRITUAL SITE TO WORLD and say that we are standing in our legs strongly.

Along with
the technical Do & Don't I have tried to give more holistic suggestion
about wearing Cristal Mala, Walking in Grass - Mud, Seeing the morning sunrise,
Yoga, Meditation. The rest of information is also detailed given in this article
by Megan which I have shared you below.

I was co-operated
by my Spiritual friends Prakash Bhattrai ( Basista ) in Camera / Edit &
Production. Ganga Kharel ( Biku ) was also assisting in technical terms. We
will be presenting more videos about the consciousness and holistic alternative
lifestyle in coming days for sure. I know you will SEE & SHARE THIS VIDEO
with beloved friends & family, and I will be waiting to see your creative
comments and suggestion .

Ways to Reduce Cell Phone Radiation
Written by Megan, Experience Life
Magazine
and published December 15, 2011.  This article is
reprinted here with notes for best protection by the Center for Electrosmog
Prevention (CEP).
1. When talking on your
cell phone, your safest bet is speakerphone mode with your phone a hand’s
length away. Not quite as good (because it still emits some radiation), but
better than holding the phone to your head, is a wired headset. A Bluetooth
emitter is your third choice. It will deliver lower levels of microwave
radiation than your cell phone, but more than the wired headset. Turn your
headset off when the phone is not in use.
[For best protection, CEP also recommends
only using cell phone for emergencies, keeping cell phones away from babies,
children and pregnant women, not holding cell phone at all, place on table two
feet away or more, on speaker, and use only a Blue Tube headset, which does not
transmit radiation along wires or wirelessly]
2. Try not to keep your
phone turned on next to your body throughout the day. Or, if you must, position
the cell phone so that the antenna, which emits radiation, is facing away from
you.
[For best protection, CEP also recommends: keep cell phone
off when not in use and use shielded pouch to keep it in, available online at
www.lessemf.com]
3. Try to use your phone
when you have the maximum number of bars, indicating the best reception. When
signal quality is poor, your phone emits more radiation.
4. Try not to use your
cell phone in elevators, cars, trains or planes. Cell phones draw more power,
and emit more radiation, in enclosed metal spaces.
5. Text instead of
calling whenever possible. The farther your phone is from your body, the
better.
6. When you are home,
use a wired landline. Remember, cordless phones connected to a landline can
emit radiation much like cell phones.
7. You may be tempted to
use one of the many radiation shields on the market, but keep in mind that they
may hamper reception, causing your cell phone to churn out more radiation.
 [ CEP also
recommends turning cell phones off when not in use and considering use of
bullion mesh shielding material when using cell phone, testing effectiveness
with a rf field meter that measures in microwave range, if desired.]
8. If you have a
wireless router in your house or apartment, keep it in a little-used room and out
of the bedroom (or turn it off altogether at night). Strive to keep your
bedroom as free of electronic radiation as possible. In addition to routers,
banish cell phones, wireless phones and computers. Purists will want to unplug
electric devices near the bed. If you are worried about “dirty electricity,”
use a battery-powered alarm clock and make sure that extension cords or power
strips do not sit under or around the bed. Avoid electric blankets and wired
mattress warmers.
[For best protection, CEP recommends not having a
wireless router, use wired cable or phone line Internet only, remove all
cordless phones from home, do not use cell phone in home, use landline only]
9. Connect to the
Internet with an Ethernet cord, not a wireless router, whenever possible.
 [For best
protection, CEP recommends wired connections and elimination of all wireless in
home.]
10. Disable your
computer’s wireless connectivity software, including Bluetooth, Airport and the
like. Otherwise, your computer will continuously send out electronic
“handshakes,” exposing you to more EMFs.
11. Use a “wired-only”
printer, as well as wired computer peripherals like a mouse and keyboard.
12. The new generation
of wireless baby monitors, often configured to sit right under the bed or the
mattress, emit radiation comparable to a cell phone.
 [For best
protection, CEP recommends never using a wireless baby monitor in home. Humans
are the best baby monitors!]
13. Beware of
radio-frequency-based smart meters, increasingly being installed by utilities
around the United States to control power consumption within a house. They have
come under suspicion as a significant source of electromagnetic radiation. For
more information, please see www.smartmeterdangers.org.
 [CEP is the
founder of Smart Meter Dangers www.smartmeterdangers.org, strongly recommends
not sleeping near or in the same room as a smart meter (located on exterior
wall) and retaining or obtaining an analog meter whenever possible. Smart
meters are associated with symptoms of radiation-illness, including sleeping
problems, ringing in ears, skin rashes, seizures, headaches, migraines, swollen
sinuses, ear pain, breathing problems, and more, according to experts]
